You can have the perfect CV, expert experience, and even a personal referral from the hiring manager – but if you walk into that interview with shaky confidence, you’ll feel it. And so will they.
As a Career Confidence Coach, I’ve seen it too many times: brilliant people downplaying their brilliance. Candidates who are more than qualified… but then allow imposter syndrome whisper them into silence. Or frozen panic.
Here’s what I want you to know. No I NEED you to know:
Confidence isn’t a personality trait. It is not in our DNA. It’s a skill. A muscle. A mindset. And you can absolutely build it and grow it before your next interview.
Let’s explore how.
Confidence Starts With Clarity
You can’t be confident in what you’re not clear about.
So before you ever rehearse an interview answer, you need to get crystal clear on:
- What you’re great at (aka: your core strengths)
- What you want in your next role (yes, you get to choose)
- What makes you different (your edge, your spark, your story)
When you know who you are, you stop needing validation. And confidence? It loves clarity.
✨ Coach Kate’s Confidence Tip: Write down 3 wins from your past roles. Then, connect them to the impact you made. Don’t just say what you did – own what changed because of you.
Prepare Like a Pro (Not a Perfectionist)
Confidence doesn’t come from having every answer memorized. Instead it comes from knowing you’re prepared enough to handle anything.
Stop aiming for the “perfect” script. Start building your talking points:
- What’s the one thing you want them to remember about you?
- What stories best showcase your problem-solving?
- What does success look like for you—and how can you create it in this role?
✨ Coach Kate’s Confidence Tip: Practice with a friend, coach (sneaky plug alert!), mentor or even your phone’s voice recorder. It’s not about sounding rehearsed or word perfect – it’s about building rhythm, flow, and trust in your voice.
Ditch the Inner Critic and Rewire the Tape
Ever hear that little voice in your head saying:
“You’re not experienced enough …“They probably have better candidates”…“What if you mess it up?”
Well… it’s lying to you. And it’s most definitely not helping you.
Confidence is not the absence of fear, it is moving forward despite it. The trick is to stop letting your thoughts sabotage you with fear and negativity before you have even entered the interview.
✨ Coach Kate’s Confidence Tip: Before your next interview, write a Confidence Success Script. A few lines you can say out loud that remind you of your power. Try this:
“I’ve earned my place here. I bring real value. I’m not here to perform – I’m here to connect.”
Say it. Repeat it. Feel it. Believe it.
Visualize Success (Instead of Fearing Rejection)
Most people walk into interviews already picturing everything that could go wrong.
Flip the script.
Close your eyes and imagine:
Walking into the room grounded and calm
Smiling, shaking hands (or logging onto Zoom) with presence
Sharing your story with ease and watching heads nod in agreement
Walking out knowing: I did that.
✨ Coach Kate’s Confidence Tip: Visualization isn’t woo-woo (I know it may sound like it) In fact, it’s neuroscience. Your brain doesn’t know the difference between real and vividly imagined success. So give it something powerful to rehearse and positive to latch onto.
Regulate Before You Articulate
No one performs well when they’re in fight-or-flight mode. Your voice tightens. Your thoughts scatter. Your energy feels off.
So before the interview starts, do a 2-minute grounding ritual:
- Breathe in through your nose for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, breathe out of your mouth for 6 counts.
- Plant your feet on the floor and roll your shoulders back
- Say your confidence script out loud
✨ Coach Kate’s Confidence Tip: Confidence lives in the body. Calm your nervous system, and your mind will follow.
Final Thought From Your Career Confidence Coach
You don’t need to fake it. In fact – never be anything but genuine you.
You don’t need to be perfect. No one is perfect as it doesn’t exist.
You don’t even need to have all the right answers. If you did there would be no room for you to grow.
However, you do need to believe that you’re worthy of the opportunity. That your experience matters. That your voice deserves to be heard.
Because it does.
So the next time you walk into that interview, remember this:
“I’m not here to convince them I’m enough. I’m here to show them what I bring. I’m here to own the room – not shrink in it.”
Confidence isn’t about volume. It’s about ownership.
And you, my friend? You’ve already got what it takes. Now go tell them.
